An executive briefing is not simply a shortened stack of emails. It is a decision product: the reader needs to understand what is happening, why it matters, which choice is required and what needs to happen next. AI can accelerate collection and structuring; selection, interpretation and final responsibility remain with me.
From summary to decision information
Copilot can reveal the main points in a long email thread. That is useful as an initial reading guide, but it is not yet a briefing. A briefing requires context, prioritisation and organisational knowledge: which detail is noise, where is the dependency and which wording may be sensitive at executive level?
My information funnel
- I define the decision question first. Without it, the result quickly becomes an informative overview that supports no actual decision.
- I set clear source boundaries. I use only information that is current, relevant and permitted in the approved work environment.
- I use AI for initial structuring. For example, to identify themes, open questions, commitments and timelines in an email thread.
- I verify against the source. Names, amounts, dates, ownership, conditions and sensitive wording are always checked by me.
- I make the executive translation. I decide what the executive needs to know, decide or have followed up now.
1. Context and objective
2. Decision or point requiring attention
3. Key facts and developments
4. Risks, dependencies and sensitivities
5. Open questions
6. Recommended next steps and owner
Where AI helps โ and where I take over
AI mainly helps me return to a file more quickly and see patterns in large volumes of text. I take over when interpretation is required: conflicting information, stakeholder dynamics, reputational risk, confidentiality or a choice involving several interests.
The quality check before sharing
Before a briefing goes out, I check four things: is the source correct, is fact clearly separated from interpretation, is a relevant stakeholder missing, and can the reader see which action or decision is required?
Availability and data sources depend on licensing and organisational settings. I use approved work environments only and do not share a draft until the source check is complete.
